For starters, the first game isn't a bad one to just go pick up, since the Wii is backwards compatible, and you could find a used (or new, for that matter) copy of the game for around $20 if you do some digging. If you didn't play Symphonia on GameCube, don't automatically write this one off. With Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World though, Namco is continuing where the story left on on Nintendo GameCube nearly five years ago, and mixing the original cast with some newcomers this time around. In the last few years we've seen two DS (Japan only, sadly) games, a couple PS2 titles, and a recent Xbox 360 release as well. Over the years the series has caught on in America, gaining a lot of popularity with Tales of Symphonia on Nintendo GameCube. For those that don't know the Tales franchise, Namco's mix of action and RPG dates back to the Super Famicom in Japan during late 1995.
